Why I switched to Microsoft Edge Web Browser

As a Microsoft Partner, I've recently immersed myself in all things Microsoft. If you're looking for a browser that offers more than just the basics, you might want to give Edge a try. Edge is Microsoft's modern browser that is fast, secure, and compatible with most websites and extensions. But what makes Edge stand out from the crowd is its unique features that enhance your browsing experience and productivity. Here are some of the benefits of using Edge as your default browser.

What is Edge?

Edge is a web browser created by Microsoft for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. It's built on the same platform as Google Chrome and other browsers called Chromium and is installed by default on Windows 10/11 PCs. Edge has many features like collections, vertical tabs, immersive reader, password monitor, and tracking prevention. It can use extensions from the Microsoft Store and Chrome Web Store. Edge is great for browsing the web because it's fast, secure, and user-friendly. Plus, it works well with most websites and web standards. You can also transfer your bookmarks, history, and settings from other browsers like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari to Edge.

Sidebar Apps: One Screen for All Things

One of the coolest features of Edge is the ability to use sidebar apps. These are mini versions of popular apps that you can access from the browser's toolbar without opening a new tab or window. For example, you can use the sidebar app for Outlook to check your email, calendar, and tasks while browsing the web. Or you can use the sidebar app for OneNote to take notes, clip web pages, and sync them across your devices. You can also use sidebar apps for Spotify, Wikipedia, Grammarly, and more.

To use sidebar apps, you need to install them from the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store. Once installed, you can click on the app icon in the toolbar and choose "Open in sidebar". The app will open in a panel on the right side of the browser window, and you can resize it or pin it as you like. You can also switch between different sidebar apps by clicking on their icons in the toolbar.

Sidebar apps are a great way to multitask and stay organized while browsing the web. You can access your favorite tools without leaving the page. Pro Tip: Use Search to search the web or the website you're browsing without having to switch tabs or use side-by-side browser windows when multitasking. Maybe you can tell I really like the sidebar.

Other Benefits of Edge: Collections, Immersive Reader, Vertical Tabs, and More

Sidebar apps are not the only feature that makes Edge a powerful browser. Here are some other benefits of using Edge:

- Collections: A feature that lets you collect and organize web pages, images, text, and links into groups that you can access later or share with others. You can also export your collections to Word or Excel for further editing.

- Immersive Reader: A feature that lets you read web pages in a distraction-free mode with options to adjust the text size, font, background color, and line spacing. You can also use Immersive Reader to read aloud web pages with natural-sounding voices and highlight parts of speech.

- Vertical Tabs: A feature that lets you switch between tabs in a vertical layout on the left side of the browser window. This way, you can see more tabs at once and easily manage them without cluttering your screen.

- Password Monitor: A feature that alerts you if any of your saved passwords have been compromised in a data breach and helps you change them quickly and securely.

- Smart Copy: Pictured below, a feature that lets you copy and paste web content with its original formatting intact. You can also use Smart Copy to capture screenshots of web pages and paste them as images.

Device Compatibility

With the Device Synchronization features of Edge, I've added it to all of my devices. What's cool is it works not only on Windows but pretty much on anything. This includes Windows Server, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux. All with the same capabilities making it perfect for a connected experience.
